MYKONOS, SIFNOS & ATHENS WITH KIDS
Travelling through Greece with two very active boys, aged four and six, might sound ambitious. For us, it's about changing the pace rather than the places we want to experience. We stay by the sea, move slowly and choose places we love that also give the boys space to be kids.
"Travelling with kids doesn't mean compromising on the places you love. You just experience them differently."
This summer took us through Mykonos, Sifnos and Athens. A few of our favourites along the way.
MYKONOS
Our favourite place to stay is Ornos. It's quieter, has great tavernas along the beach and is close enough to Mykonos Town and the rest of the island.
Starting here also makes sense for us. Qatar flies directly from Doha to Mykonos, cutting around six hours from the journey compared with travelling via Athens. With two kids, it makes a difference.
Beaches: Ornos + Lia Beach | Dinner: Hippie Fish + Alemagou
We love the more iconic Mykonos spots too, but with young kids we've learnt to find the happy medium, somewhere we want to be, with enough space for them to enjoy themselves too.
Our other rule: feed the boys before dinner.
After the beach, we'd feed them around 5pm before heading out. Everyone was happier, dinner was more relaxed and, more often than not, our four-year-old eventually fell asleep in the pram while we stayed out.
SIFNOS
From Mykonos, we travel between the islands by ferry. No internal flights or airport check-ins-just drive to the port and, usually within a couple of hours, we're on another island. This year, Sifnos was a highlight.
Beaches: Faros + Platis Gialos | Eat & Drink: Alyelo + Lamarina + Yialos + Loggia Bar
At Alyelo, we could spend the entire day on the sand before moving a few metres for lunch while the boys continued playing. The food was some of my favourite on the island.
Nearby, Lamarina is a beautiful bakery with a modern take on traditional Greek food -perfect for something casual and a favourite with the boys.
Long beach days are our thing while they're this young. They swim, explore, make friends, play soccer, build sandcastles and fish. We play UNO on repeat.
"For now, slow days by the sea are our favourite way to see the world together."
ATHENS
I love Athens, but we prefer to stay by the sea in Glyfada, around 20 minutes from the city. It gives us the best of both-long days at the beach followed by early evenings exploring Athens.
Eat: Ithaki + Labros | Casual Dinner: Barbounaki
One of our favourite nights with the boys is watching the Changing of the Guard at Syntagma Square, then walking through the city towards the Acropolis and finishing with a drink on a rooftop overlooking it.
Simple, but one of those evenings that stays with you.
Lake Vouliagmeni was another favourite. A natural thermal lake surrounded by limestone cliffs, it's incredibly beautiful and an easy place to spend the day with the boys. Swim, settle in by the water and stay for lunch - relaxed, effortless and only a short drive from Glyfada.
A FEW NOTES ON TRAVELLING WITH KIDS
We've learnt not to recreate the way we travelled before children, but to find a rhythm that works for this season of life. Fewer destinations. Longer stays. Days by the sea. Ferries over airports. Early dinners for the boys and late ones for us.
There is less rushing and more time spent in one place.
And perhaps that's the part I love most. Watching the boys make friends without speaking the same language, play soccer until the sun goes down, spend hours in the water and fall asleep after days lived entirely outside.
It isn't always seamless, but it doesn't need to be.
"The way we travel has changed. The desire to see the world together hasn't."
Lia.
